The clothes have such a purity—the blue and white (and even the tans) that he has reinterpreted so many times, in so many ways. But in their simplest form, those hues reminded him of sky and ocean, of sand and weathered shingles — a beauty and peacefulness of the natural world he discovered in the Hamptons so long ago as a young man. ​ The Hamptons was a refuge and a home.
