Hong Kong’s flag-carrier Cathay Pacific is to become the latest airline to include premium economy seating.

The carrier will begin rolling out premium economy cabins next year between Hong Kong and Sydney, Singapore, Toronto and Shanghai.

Further destinations are expected to follow throughout 2012 reported Australian Business Traveller

A premium economy section will put Cathay Pacific in direct competition with carriers such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Qantas, all of whom offer a similar class positioned between economy and business.

Typically, the offer includes wider seats, better entertainment and catering and other extras, including a better standard of service.

The cabins enjoyed a surge of popularity during the financial crisis’s lowest points, as business travelers downgraded from business in an attempt at frugality, although many have now returned to the business, or even first, class cabins.

This week, American Airlines unveiled a new ‘turndown’ service (pictured below) for its international business and first class passengers, promising quilted bed toppers, pyjamas and slippers.

Beginning September 1, American will become the only US airline to offer all three as part of its service, as well as rolling out a new amenity kit containing Dermalogica skincare products.
