Watch Carrying Cases: One for the Road
Travelling with more than one watch this summer? In part two of our ongoing series, we explore some watch carrying cases to keep your timepieces safe on the road.
Unless you suffer from “oneitis”, or own a completely versatile timepiece from Rolex, Audemars Piguet or a similar brand, you’ll likely need more than one watch for different occasions in your travels. Here are some recommendations that let your timepieces travel safely with you. Of course, it goes without saying that you should lock your unused watch(es) in your hotel room’s safe for security reasons, subject to the caveat that it’s a reputable establishment. Else, all bets are off.
The Oakley Large Watch Soft Vault (US$20) is as basic as it gets, with a shell of integrated nylon and a soft-brushed interior to provide some basic protection against scratches and and rough handling.
Pelican is better known for ultra-hardy cases that professionals use for storing their equipment. The Pelican 1120 case (S$60) shown here can fit around three watches, and is watertight, crushproof and dustproof. The supplied foam can be cut out to fit your watch regardless of size.
The Hodinkee Canvass Roll (US$110) will hold any combination of up to six complete watches or straps. Given the sparse protection offered, however, we suggest using it only with carry-on or hard shell luggage.
Omega’s watch storage box (S$650) has a leather construction, and comes in black and brown variants besides the orange one shown here. A larger one capable of holding six watches is also available for S$810.
LV’s 8 Watch Case (S$8,500) comes in its classic Monogram canvas, and features a removeable tray for you to hide other valuables. We are certain that the little lock on it wouldn’t stop a determined thief, but the reinforced corners do add good measures of protection against knocks and bumps.
Like the Louis Vuitton case featured before this, Cartier’s Watch and Jewellery Box with Kaleidoscope Decor has space for multiple items, including cufflinks, earrings, bracelets, and large necklaces. It also holds up to six watches, and retails for a princely S$15,700.
