As the world braces itself for lost sleep in light of the imminent FIFA World Cup, Bulgari pays tribute to host country Brazil with the Octo Bi-Retro Brazil collection, dressed in the blue, green and yellow of the country’s flag. Named for its retrograde minutes and date, this special run of Octo Bi-Retro is limited to only 50 pieces.
The colours of the of Octo Bi-Retro Brazil’s dial have been achieved using champlevé, an enamelling technique that involves carving a depression into the dial’s surface, filling it with vitreous enamel and firing it until the enamel fuses, followed by polishing. As can be seen, areas worked with champlevé are sunken relative to their surroundings, with the untouched portions of the dial framing the coloured regions instead.
Besides the bold colouring, the timepiece also features a jumping hour which is visible through the aperture at twelve o’clock. The aforementioned retrograde minute and date indicators are laid out like an instrument panel, with the former sweeping across a broad 210° sector separated into ten-minute sections, and the latter in a smaller 180° sector at the bottom of the dial. You can thus tell the date and time at a glance with this watch, even though it doesn’t have the typical layout of central hour and minute hands.
The watch is housed in a 43mm steel case with ceramic and rhodium inserts, and has a Calibre GG7722 self-winding movement developed and manufactured in-house by Bulgari. With such a bold and instantly recognisable dial, fans of the Brazilian football might just want to take “wear your team colours” one big step further with this watch.
