This year, the United Nations invites us all to review what we have done for the seas on World Oceans Day, and what Blancpain Ocean Commitment is all about.

Once again, it is World Oceans Day, and we hope you have been thinking about the health of our planet’s oceans more than once a year. As the maker of the world’s first true dive watch with unidirectional bezel in 1953, Blancpain certainly has been. As we noted last year, World Oceans Day is particularly important for watch enthusiasts, given the prominence of the dive watch to all of us, and consequently the watchmaking industry.

While watch brands such as Blancpain, have been trying to make better dive watches for decades, they would not do this if the watches did not sell. And sell they do, so we would think that a reminder of what lies beneath old Big Blue on your wrist would make you more than a little interested in how the oceans are doing.

The theme of World Oceans Day 2022 is “Revitalization: collective action for the ocean,” and it is particularly apt given that the pandemic has overtaken all other concerns. Thankfully, we will see the back of Covid-19 but the challenges facing our oceans will not go so quietly. On the other hand, given that we have all been working together, in one way or another, to fight the pandemic, perhaps we will learn that collective action can reap rewards. Blancpain invites you to rediscover all the work that has gone into conserving our oceans, and perhaps to find new meaning in that Fifty Fathoms watch on your wrist (or wish list).

This year marks the first time World Oceans Day has seen a hybrid model of celebrations, with a physical event at the United Nations headquarters in New York being broadcast live. Hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations, the event promises to show how we can all work together to revitalise our oceans, or at least revitalise our own commitment. According to the United Nations, the event will be graced by “thought-leaders, celebrities, institutional partners, community voices, entrepreneurs, and cross-industry experts about the biodiversity and economic opportunity that the ocean sustains.”  You can get a summary of what Blancpain has been for the ocean with our own coverage here, or via Blancpain’s own corporate social responsibility page here
