The allure of crocodile and alligator skins for high-end fashion items never seems to decline. The unique aesthetics of crocodile and alligator skins make them a perennial choice for wallets, shoes, bags and other high-end luxury items, often with a very high price tag and this latest Louis Vuitton Crocodilian Leather Backpack has a very very high price tag.

First unveiled at the Louis Vuitton Men’s Fall-Winter 2018 show, this Crocodilian Leather Backpack was an accessorial companion to ensembles of the new collection but soon emerged as a show stealer. The outstanding Louis Vuitton leather backpack is crafted from rare crocodilian leather in Titanium grey, the season’s signature hue.

Combining a sporty spirit with ultimate luxury, the US$79,000 Louis Vuitton Crocodilian Leather Backpack is fitted with technical-style Titanium buckles and zip, the bag’s padded back and straps ensure a comfortable carry.

According to Bloomberg, “Exotic animal skins make up almost 10 percent of total revenue from handbag sales for luxury brands, at least double their share a few years ago.” In 2012, the luxury accessories market was worth an estimated $77 billion.

Artistically speaking,  large panels of crocodilian skin required by Louis Vuitton to create a top quality backpack means having to use the skin of more mature animals, as younger crocs may not be large enough to have enough skin for a seamless pattern.

Furthermore, what compounds the difficulty in getting these high grade crocodile skins is that crocodiles are aggressive animals. In the wild, finding an adult crocodile with no scratches or scars in its hide would be miraculous, so the primary source for skins that can be used in high quality leather backpacks like the Louis Vuitton Crocodilian come from special crocodile farms. Even then, it’s no easy task – taking several years to raise a crocodile from an egg to a full adult, the financial investment is further compounded by the fact that crocodiles have to be placed on a strict feeding routine to ensure that their skin is top-quality while their living pools require frequent cleaning and maintenance to prevent infections and disease from causing harm and damaging the skin. It is little wonder that the Louis Vuitton Crocodilian Leather Backpack costs US$79,000; no wonder it’s the world’s most expensive backpack.
