Paris Fashion Week: Haute Couture Guests 2016

Hand-made and unique, the designs will take center stage at Haute Couture week.

Fashion Week is almost over but not before Haute Couture has its moment in the spotlight. From July 3 to 7, Paris Fashion Week will showcase a brand new slew of haute couture collections by specially selected design houses, including guest designers.

The unique creations may be something that only a lucky (not to mention daring) few will get to wear — we’re looking at you Lady Gaga. The term haute couture itself is a protected designation that has its own regulatory commission “Chambre syndicale de la haute couture” to decide which houses make it as part of the official line-up. No one cannot simple declare that something is haute couture, and leave it at that. For those who wonder just how strict that rules are, well garments have to be hand made in the studios of the fashion houses.

For those fashion houses invited by the commission this year, this is considered to be one of fashion’s highest honors. Several guest designers, who will be presenting their very first haute couture collections this year, include Yuima Nakazato, J. Mendel and Francesco Scognamiglio. The highlight of the four days, is the eagerly awaited Vetements show. With Demna Gvasalia at the helm, the label is set to present no less than 18 iconic ready-to-wear and accessories brands.

Several brands are being watched carefully for reasons other than the unique designs on the catwalk. One such label is Dior, who will be presenting its haute Couture collection for autumn/winter 2016, is expected to announce the appointment of Maria Grazia Chiuri as its new creative director. It may be old news for many but this will make it official for the brand that has been looking for someone to fill the shoes of Raf Simons since October last year.
