Everything You Need To Know About Kenzo’s “The Everything”
Shot in his high school and featuring his mother, KENZO’s “The Everything” is a film close to creative director Humberto Leon’s heart in many ways.
KENZO‘s creative director Humberto Leon joined hands with his long-time design partner Carol Lim to create his first fashion film that is everything quirky and buoyant. While the creative pair has handed the cameras to names like Natasha Lyonne and Carrie Brownstein in previous campaigns, The Everything is the film Leon chose to make his directional debut. Turns out, Leon has been thinking of directing a film for over a decade and the new film is inspired by his own daydream, where the bulk of the script is written as he was commuting on a plane.
Humberto’s Humble Daydream
The storyline revolves around a superpower-inclined family set in an 80s camp vibe (à la a light-hearted version of Netflix’s Stranger Things), casting superstar Milla Jovovich playing the protective mother to the brood of teenagers portrayed by Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Sasha Frolova – each of them wearing KENZO, of course. Despite having the KENZO Fall-Winter 2018 collections and KENZO – La Collection Memento N°3 blatantly featured on the actors, the film felt nothing close an advertisement, in which Leon gave credits to his creative partner Carol Lim and the cast.
“They brought their own spirit into the roles. That’s the way I love to work.”
“One of the things that were most exciting is having asked the actors and actresses in the film about what their roles meant and what their contributions meant,” Leon explained the works behind the creative process of The Everything. “I really love to collaborate, and I collaborated with each and every one of them. They brought their own spirit into the roles. That’s the way I love to work.”
At the opening of KENZO’s show in New York, Leon said in a statement “I think about a lot how Carol and I work,” and “family is one of the most important things to me.” As the runway cleared up, the celebration of the film was concluded with friends of the brand (including Leon’s high school friends who were also cast in the film), a family not tied by blood but a passion for art and fashion.
