Cantarutti

Cantarutti’s Hyppo settee offers a playful, cosy form. Image: Cantarutti.

Born in Cortona in 1980, Valerio Sommella earned his design chops from studying industrial design at Milan’s Politecnico. His idea of good design is a balance of materials, technologies, form, and function. Thus, the objects he creates are deemed as “short stories” — each with its own design narrative, plot, characters, and ending.

And so with the Hyppo series of armchairs, sofas, settees, and poufs, which he designed for Italian furniture brand Cantarutti, it is all about subtle curves and generous volumes. While the upholstery is sumptuous and embracing, the small wooden elements which form the legs add a beautiful and striking contrast. The fact that the settee’s or armchair’s edges are perfectly rounded, they seem totally absent. One can choose leather or fabric to complete your seating solution. There’s no denying that you reap absolute warmth and comfort spending time sitting or lounging on them.
