The MARRIOTT HOTEL CHAIN has rolled out wireless charging devices designed to enable guests to travel sans power chords.
The hotel has placed Kube Systems’ portable charging stations in the lobbies of 29 hotels this month, small boxes that can power up to six devices at a time using their Qi wireless charging technology.
To use, guests rest their smartphones on the transmitter.
According to a Marriott Hotels survey, the new technology will help the average business traveler, who carries up to three mobile devices with them on the road, to leave tangles of power chords at home.
The move, meanwhile, may come a little too late for the hotel chain, which suffered a PR disaster after it was fined $600,000 by the US Federal Communications Commission for deliberately jamming up personal Wifi hotspots and forcing guests to pony up and join the hotel’s paying network.
