Your mission: to reach the summit of Gaislachkogl mountain. Hidden from sight under layers of snow, tucked away high up in the Austrian Alps, is a cinematic installation for you to discover.

007 Elements is an immersive glimpse into the world of one of cinema’s favourite action heroes, celebrating the work of Bond set designer Sir Ken Adams and behind-the-scenes footage from the films.

Due to open on July 12, the exhibit is located at the top of the Gaislachkogl mountain, housed in a structure resembling a Bond villain’s lair. The 007 Elements exhibition will feature props and exhibits from the various Bond movies; allowing attendees to immerse in the action packed world of Bond.

The site of the 007 Elements exhibition is highly relevant to the Bond Universe – the Gaislachkogl ski resort in Sölden was one of the settings for Spectre, the 24th Bond film released in 2015. An impressive chase scene was shot in the mountainous area over five weeks, featuring an aircraft and a fleet of Range Rovers. Not far from this installation is the glass Ice Q restaurant, which was also featured in Spectre as the Hoffler Klinik.

The striking, contemporary structure built unconventionally on the mountaintop was designed by Austrian architect Johann Obermoser. Interestingly, only the entrance, exit, two windows and a viewing plaza are visible from the outside. The designer of Ice-Q, as well as the cable car station that takes visitors to the summit, took inspiration from Bond villain lairs when designing the exhibition space.

The ultra-futuristic site contains just minimal interiors, with some rooms dedicated to screen the 007 films to immerse visitors into the spy world. Other rooms showcase the locations that provided the dramatic backdrop to the Bond movies.

From weapons and spy-tech to a full-fledged plane crash, the 007 Elements exhibition will feature many original props and gadgets, with more focus on the more recent movies.

Although the displays and installations are not crafted to the greatest detail, the stunning location of the 007 Elements exhibition makes it a worthy trips for Bond affectionados.

Speaking to Architectural Digest, Obermoser described the various challenges of building the structure at an altitude: “The permafrost at this elevation, the geological fault lines, and the exposed location on the peak created huge challenges during the build,” he said.

“The snowfall prevented us from getting vehicles to the site, so we ended up having to fly the concrete in by helicopter.”
