Iconic auto brand Mini has announced the addition of a sixth model to its lineup, the Mini Roadster that will launch alongside the MINI Coupe hardtop in March.
The first open-topped two seater in Mini history, the Roadster is set to go on sale next spring to compete with the likes of the Mazda MX-5.
With a manually-opening soft-top roof, the model is designed to be more free-spirited than the four-seater Mini Convertible, with a sweeped look, lower profile and a steeped rear end, which holds a manually-operated roof.
Mini says that the model will have a ‘go-kart’ driving feel thanks to a bespoke chassis setup, optional driving technologies such as dynamic traction control and electronic differential lock control and an automatically-extended rear spoiler.
It will be powered by the most powerful gasoline and diesel engines in the Mini lineup, including a 155kW/211hp Mini John Cooper Works model, a Mini Cooper S Roadster with 135kW/184 hp, a Mini Cooper SD Roadster with 105kW/143hp and an entry level model with 90kW/122hp.
Inside, the model will use bespoke color and materials and contain a premium set of standard equipment including electric mirrors, speed-sensitive steering assistance, parking assistance and air conditioning for all models.
The official debut is expected to take place at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, which kicks off next January 9 in Detroit.
