Mercedes-Benz unveils SLS AMG E-Cell

Mercedes-Benz has finally unveiled its next-gen electric vehicle, the SLS AMG E-Cell, which is on display at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL is part of Mercedes-AMGās āAMG Performance 2015ā strategy that aims to continually reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Power for the E-Cell will be provided by four electric motors ā all located at the rear of the vehicle ā that are capable of revving to 12,000 rpm.
Power for the setup totals 525 horsepower and 649 lb-ft of torque, good enough for a zero-to-62 time of just 4 seconds.
For comparison, the gas-powered SLS can hit 62 from a standstill in 3.8 seconds.
No word from the brand about the range of SLS AMG E-Cell and how long the will batteries will take to charge either.
This electric car is expected to cost somewhere around $183,000, which is identical to regular SLS AMG supercarās price tag. The E-Cell will begin production in 2013.
