The Rolls-Royce Cullinan may be the latest to join the breed of super SUVs but it looks like the Lamborghini Urus ST-X, a racing update to its pioneering super SUV is set to raise the bar a little higher. In fact, Lamborghini is creating its own racing league for its line-up of Urus SUVs; this league would be a single-brand championship beginning 2020 that will feature not just your traditional race circuit but also off-road track elements as expected for races involving Sport Utility Vehicles.

Lamborghini Urus ST-X is the first Super SUV designed for racing

The new Lamborghini Urus ST-X will be the star of the brand-new one-make racing series. It was unveiled at the Vallelunga Circuit, north of Rome, during Lamborghini’s World Finals event last November 2018. The Urus ST-X Concept aims to take the unbridled of the standard (if a super SUV could ever be “standard”) Urus’s 4-litre twin-turbo V8 and deliver 641 horses under the hood of a much lighter Lamborghini Urus ST-X concept,  a reduction of 25% or 550kg lighter than your regular civilian Urus. This weight reduction is possible despite the fact that Lamborghini’s Squadra Corsa team has updated the Urus ST-X with all the necessary FIA required safety elements like a roll cage, fire suppression system, and an FT3 racing fuel tank.

While a typical SUV may not seem to be the best vehicle for racing, it’s important to note that this super SUV was designed by Sant’Agata Bolognese after all. The new Lamborghini Urus ST-X concept also features larger air intakes to give the Urus’ twin-turbo V8 more optimal oxygen mix and a dedicated rear wing for better downforces.

This single brand, single make race is not Lamborghini’s first. It first ran the Supertrophy series for its venerable Diablo. This was replaced by the Gallardo series of Super Trofeo championships in 2009 before being replaced by the Huracan in 2016.

The track debut of the new Urus ST-X super SUV will take place during the Lamborghini World Finals meeting in 2019. Subsequently, an “arrive and drive” owner-driver experience will be available on FIA-approved tracks in Europe and the Middle East starting in 2020.
