Maserati, one of the best-known and most-exclusive names in luxury cars, is gearing up to become a more mainstream automaker.

This week, it revealed plans to up the number of cars it produces to 50,000 units a year by 2015, introducing three new models between now and then.

To put that number in perspective, last year Maserati delivered just 6,159 units, making its cars among the rarest on the roads.

Although the brand has already unveiled the Kubang SUV, one of the new models, it’s also expected to introduce a ‘lite’ version of its $127,000 Quattroporte, a mainstream model to compete with the likes of the BMW 5 Series or the Audi A6.

But for buyers looking for something even lower down the scale, it may soon be possible to buy a Maserati-built vehicle, just without the brand.

As part of cost-cutting exercises by Fiat, a new model from sister firm Alfa Romeo is set to be produced by Maserati in its Modena plant, ahead of going on sale next year.

The car is likely to be the high-performance flagship of the Alfa Romeo range, a rear-wheel-drive coupe which will herald Alfa Romeo’s return to the US and go on sale in Europe too, priced at around €50,000 ($66,000).

According to Automotive News, Maserati will produce the car because “Alfa does not have the expertise to build low volume, hand-built models” — meaning buyers will be getting Maserati expertise, at a fraction of the price.

It is said to be based on the 4C concept unveiled in Geneva and will go on sale next year.
