Whether you are just starting your journey as a whisky appreciator or a connoisseur, Whisky Journey will be one experience that should not be missed. In its third edition, Whisky Journey 2022 promises to showcase over 20 exhibitors who will be bringing more than 100 whisky expressions to the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre between 2 to 3 December, 2022.
A must-visit for any whisky enthusiasts, the two-day event brings together some of the world’s most exclusive expressions and is a gathering place for like-minded fans to share in their love for the “water of life”. With a plethora of whiskies on-site, starting the journey will be difficult so we have put together a list of the five whiskies you should keep an eye out for at Whisky Journey 2022.
Tomatin 1993 Cask 6810 for 125th Anniversary
Personally selected by Master Distiller Graham Eunson in 1993 to celebrate the distillery’s 125th anniversary, the whisky was laid down to mature in an Oloroso Sherry Cask. Using such a cask is reminiscent of how the distillery first started in 1897. The nose is initially very soft; on the palate, the distinctive flavours of Oloroso Sherry Cask surge before aromas of coffee liqueur, flamed orange, caramel and black walnut bitters take over in a bold move. The whisky’s complex profile further expands to include herbal notes of pipe tobacco and eucalyptus, followed by European Oak spice, toffee and dark chocolate. The finish is deep and rich.
Currach Umeshu Cask Whisky Journey exclusive
The Currach Single Malt Irish Whiskey is one of the most innovative on this list as it is finished in a seaweed charred cask. This unique whiskey was conceptualised during Whisky Journey 2021 by Patrick Shelly, the owner of Currach Irish Whiskey. This year, the distillery is proud to bring its creation to visitors: the first and only Umeshu cask finish Irish Whiskey.
Made from pure Irish malted barley, the triple-distilled malt Irish whiskey was initially matured in 1st filled American oak ex-bourbon barrel and then transferred to an Atlantic Kombu seaweed charred virgin American oak cask. For Whisky Journey 2022, a special bottling is set aside where additional finishing in a cask seasoned with unique Umeshu from the Hyōgo region in Japan is used as a limited edition. A must-try for the event!
Springbank 21-year-old & 25-year-old
Springbank is a renowned distillery that remains the only one that malt, distils, matures and bottles its whisky on the same site. The art of whisky-making at Springbank largely follows the traditional methods as the tools used are mainly from the old days when the distillery first started. As with the world’s current obsession with the “old world”, Springbank’s classic style has garnered much attention as its bottles of whisky have seen prices soaring close to five times its original.
In Whiskey Journey 2022, the distillery will bring out two prized possessions: the 21-year-old and the 25-year-old. These rare expressions are up for ballot at an attractive price and are definitely a collector’s item during the event.
Ao Whisky
One of the Asian distilleries during the event comes from the House of Suntory. The Japanese whisky maker’s Yamazaki range has taken whiskies from the Land of the Rising Sun to a level playing field with its counterpart in Scotland. The different palate profiles also caused a paradigm shift in the appreciation of the liquor. This almost century-old legacy continues, and now a new collection has been birthed: Ao whisky. Suntory’s philosophy in whisky-making lives on in this new spirit and pays homage to the oceans that connect whisky’s five great traditions. Ao is a blend of Irish, Scottish, Canadian, American and Japanese.
Despite its multi-faceted nature, Ao is layered in perfect harmony where balance is achieved and each tradition comes through naturally when tasting. At Whisky Journey 2022, be the first to witness the launch of this exceptional blend.
Bruichladdich Black Art Edition 10.1: 29 Aged Years
While many distillers have made it to bottle their precious liquids in transparent glass, Bruichladdich takes the opposite stance. Its whisky is housed in a black bottle, away from prying eyes who attempt to take a sneak peek. The popular Black Art series from the distillery has become an enigma for many whisky fans across the globe as apart from the vintage alone being revealed, the whisky has no other information. This “mysterious allure”, as many would put it, is what captured the attention of scores of whiskey lovers. Making its appearance this Whisky Journey 2022 is the tenth edition, Black Art Edition 10. Nothing is known about this whisky, not even its type of barley and cask used. Be sure to head over to Bruichladdich’s booth to uncover this mystery whisky.
