According to figures released by the OVSE, the Italian wine observatory, prosecco outsold champagne 307 million bottles to 304 million last year.
In dollar figures, that translates to a 16% spike in worldwide revenue, and a volume increase of 12%. The Italian version of French bubbly has become a popular alternative to champagne for its budget-friendly price tag.
Spain’s version of sparkling wine, cava, is also experiencing growing popularity around the world, with 243 million bottles sold in 2012 — up 3.6 million from the year before, says a group representing the industry, the Consejo Regulador Cava.
Cava is particularly popular in Germany, which was the leading importer of the Spanish sparkling wine in 2012 at 39.4 million bottles, followed by the UK, which imported 35.9 million bottles and Belgium, at 24.8 million.
