As host to a major international sporting event in 2015, Toronto has been named the top Canadian destination to visit this year.

The reason Toronto was chosen as the top Canadian city in 2015 goes beyond the fact that it’s the biggest, most multicultural and arguably most cosmopolitan city in Canada.

According to travel journalists at Vacay.ca, Toronto will be thrown into the international spotlight this year when it hosts The Pan Am Games in July, billed as the biggest multi-sport event to be held in the country.

For about two weeks, Toronto will host 6,000 athletes from 41 countries and 250,000 visitors from around the world.

The Pan Am Games are the third largest international multi-sport Games, after the Olympic Summer Games and the Asian Games.

Likewise, the Toronto International Film Festival will celebrate a milestone anniversary this year, when it fetes its 40th edition in September.

Rounding out the top three spots are Revelstoke, British Columbia, for hosting the Red Bull Cold Rush, a freestyle skiing competition in February, and Auyuittuq National Park in Nunavut, which garnered international headlines last year after a shipwreck from the Franklin Expedition was discovered off Baffin Island, 170 years after its disappearance.

Nature lovers will find nature in its raw, untouched form in the park, with dark, grey mountains, glaciers, rivers and ice.

Another major event this year will be the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada games, which will take place in six cities across the country. The final championship game will be held in Vancouver.
