Stitched is a Singapore-grown company that specialises in bespoke suits that are both affordable and exquisitely made. From customising fabric, collars and cuffs to monogram embroidery, Stitched aims to create a suit that not only perfectly fits but also instils a feeling of confidence and pride in the wearer. Head of Alterations and Quality Assurance, Ying Tong Tan, breaks down the intricate processes of Stitched and shares essential advice for those looking to get a custom suit of their own.

STITCHED Custom was launched in 2016. You actually started interning in fashion ateliers and workshops rather early. Tell us about your first steps in the women’s and men’s fashion & tailoring world?

Where did your passion for tailoring originate from?

Ying Tong Tan (YT): My passion for tailoring began when I started working at a tailor shop as a full-time consultant. While there, I had the opportunity to observe the older generation of tailors meticulously working on customer garments. Witnessing their skill and dedication resonated deeply with me, as I found the craft both useful and meaningful. It struck me that this skill, passed down through generations, might eventually fade away if not embraced by younger individuals. Recognising the importance of preserving this traditional art form, I became passionate about learning and continuing the legacy of tailoring.

Tell us about the fabric selection process and fitting steps at STITCHED? What is the usual timeframe between the first consultation and the pick-up day?

YT: At STITCHED, the fabric selection process and fitting steps are integral parts of our personalised service. During the initial consultation, we take the time to understand our client’s preferences, style, and requirements. We offer a wide range of high-quality fabrics sourced from reputable suppliers, ensuring there’s something to suit every taste and occasion

Once the fabric is chosen, we proceed with the fitting process. Our skilled tailors meticulously take measurements and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit. Depending on the complexity of the garment and the client’s schedule, this may involve one or more fitting sessions to achieve the desired result

As for the timeframe, it usually take around a month first consultation to the pickup date. But this timeline, varies from availability of fabric, and the client’s preferences. we strive to deliver exceptional service with a reasonable turnaround time, ensuring our clients receive their custom-tailored garments in a timely manner. Throughout the process, we maintain open communication with our clients to keep them informed about the progress of their order and address any questions or concerns they may have.

The DNA behind STITCHED Custom is truly unique, and we pride ourselves on several key aspects that set us apart from other similar outlets in Singapore.

Personalisation: At STITCHED Custom, we prioritise to understand our customers’ needs, preferences, and comfort levels. Whether it’s through advanced measurement technology or modern design elements, we strive to stay ahead of the curve while preserving the timeless art of tailoring. We have recently revamp our website with 3D Visualization, enable customers to better visualize their selected customizations. Which common mistakes do men do when dressing? And ladies?

YT: Following Trends Blindly: Dressing solely based on current trends without considering whether the style suits their body type, personality, or personal preferences can lead to fashion faux pas. It’s important to choose clothing that aligns with one’s individual style and comfort level rather than simply following what’s popular at the moment.

Ignoring Fit: Wearing ill-fitting clothing can detract from one’s overall appearance and make even the most stylish outfit look sloppy. Whether it’s clothing that’s too tight, too loose, or simply not tailored to their body shape, neglecting proper fit is a common mistake that can easily be avoided.

Ignoring Comfort: Dressing in clothing that’s uncomfortable or restrictive can negatively impact one’s confidence and overall demeanor. It’s essential to prioritize comfort while still maintaining style by choosing clothing that allows for ease of movement and makes the wearer feel at ease.

By avoiding these common mistakes and focusing on dressing in a way that aligns with their personal style, comfort, and body type, both men and women can ensure that they always look and feel their best.

Who are your typical clients for alterations work?

YT: My typical clients for alterations work encompass a diverse range of individuals, both male and female, who have varying needs and preferences:

  1. Revampers: These clients are looking to breathe new life into their existing wardrobe by having their old clothes altered to better fit their current style or body shape. Whether it’s updating the hemline of a skirt, taking in the waist of a pair of pants, or resizing a jacket, alterations can transform outdated or ill-fitting garments into fashionable and wearable pieces.
  2. Tailored Fit Seekers: Some clients purchase off-the-rack clothing that they love but require minor adjustments to achieve the perfect fit. Whether it’s shortening sleeves, tapering pant legs, or adjusting the shoulders of a jacket, these alterations ensure that the garment flatters the wearer’s body and enhances their overall appearance.
  3. Brides and Wedding Party: Alterations for brides are a significant part of my clientele. Whether it’s adjusting the length or fit of a wedding gown, adding embellishments, or creating custom alterations for bridesmaids’ dresses, I cater to the unique needs of brides and their wedding parties to ensure that they look stunning on their special day.

Tell us about the key advice you provide to grooms looking at investing in a tailor-made suit for their wedding day?

YT: When advising grooms who are considering investing in a tailor-made suit for their wedding day, I always emphasise the importance of choosing a suit that not only reflects their personal style but also complements the overall wedding theme and the bride’s attire.

Consider the Wedding Theme: The groom’s suit should harmonise with the overall theme and vibe of the wedding. Whether it’s a formal black-tie affair, a rustic outdoor celebration, or a modern city wedding, the suit should align with the aesthetic and atmosphere of the event.

Coordinate with the Bride’s Attire: It’s essential to coordinate the groom’s suit with the bride’s gown and overall bridal party attire. This doesn’t necessarily mean matching exactly but rather complementing each other in terms of style, colour palette, and level of formality.

Focus on Fit and Comfort: A well-tailored suit not only looks stylish but also ensures comfort throughout the wedding day. I emphasise the importance of achieving the perfect fit. You need to feel comfortable on your special day, where you need to mingle around with the guest. the groom should also feel confident in his suit.

Plan Ahead: Investing in a tailor-made suit takes time, so I advise grooms to start the process well in advance of the wedding date. This allows ample time for fittings, adjustments, and any customisations to ensure that the suit is perfect for the big day. Explore different tailors and find one understand what you need. Finding a vendor, you need to find someone who you can work with and able understand and cater to your needs.

Ultimately, my key advice to grooms is to choose a tailor-made suit that they love and feel comfortable in, while also ensuring that it complements the overall wedding aesthetic and coordinates with the bride’s attire. By focusing on fit, style, and attention to detail, the groom can look and feel his best on this special day.

Where do you see your Company STITCHED five years down the line: which additional physical presence in Singapore? Having expended to other South-East Asian markets?

YT: In five years, I envision STITCHED continuing to thrive and expand its presence in Singapore and potentially beyond. Here’s where I see the company:

Expanded Physical Presence: I hope to see STITCHED move to a larger and more prominent location in Singapore, allowing us to better showcase our bespoke tailoring services and provide an enhanced customer experience. A spacious and well-appointed storefront can attract more foot traffic and elevate our brand presence in the market.

Employee Growth and Development: As STITCHED grows, I prioritize providing our employees with competitive wages, opportunities for advancement, and a supportive work environment. Investing in our team’s growth and development is crucial to maintaining the high standards of craftsmanship and service that define STITCHED.

Introduction of New Products: With the introduction of our new shoe brand, I anticipate reaching a wider customer base and expanding our product offerings. By diversifying our portfolio, we can cater to a broader range of preferences and further establish STITCHED as a destination for premium menswear and accessories.

What brands in the current world of fashion inspire you the most?

YT: No current fashion brands particularly inspiring, but it’s the dedication and passion of the older generation of seamstresses and tailors that truly captivate me. Their unwavering commitment to sewing and their lifelong pursuit of learning, even in their advanced years, serve as a constant source of inspiration for you. Despite the challenges of age, many of them continue to sew with remarkable skill and dedication. Some of these experienced individuals have generously shared their knowledge with me, serving as mentors who not only teach me the art of sewing but also impart valuable insights into alterations and pattern drafting. Their commitment to their craft, their willingness to share their knowledge, and their continued pursuit of learning even in their later years are admirable qualities. They represent a legacy of craftsmanship and skill that is worth preserving and celebrating.

Getting a suit is a long-term investment. What are your views on the concept of “fast fashion”?

YT:Fast fashion indeed offers convenience and affordability, making trendy clothing accessible to a wide range of consumers. However, it often comes at the cost of quality, sustainability, and ethical considerations. Everything comes with a price, and the true cost of fast fashion extends beyond its price tag.

Investing in a well-made suit, while it may require a higher initial investment, offers numerous benefits in terms of quality, durability, and timeless style. A tailored suit not only fits better and lasts longer but also carries a sense of craftsmanship and personalization that cannot be replicated by mass-produced garments.

Ultimately, it’s important for consumers to weigh the pros and cons of fast fashion and make informed choices based on their values, priorities, and budget. By supporting sustainable and ethical fashion practices, we can contribute to a more responsible and conscious fashion industry while still enjoying stylish and better-quality clothing.

Your ultimate mantra in life?

YT: My ultimate mantra in life is to “embrace happiness and live life to the fullest.”

This mantra reminds me to prioritise my happiness and well-being, seeking joy in both big moments and small pleasures. It encourages me to embrace new experiences, pursue my passions, and savour every moment. Life is a precious gift, and by living it to the fullest, I aim to create meaningful memories, cultivate authentic connections, and find fulfilment in the journey.
