In the ever-evolving landscape of jewellery design, Ruben Roque stands as a trailblazer, pushing boundaries and redefining modern masculine expression. With a commitment to sustainability and a distinctive approach to design, Roque’s creations capture the essence of individuality while embracing technological innovation and historical influences.

You’ve been described as a game-changer in the jewellery design world. What do you believe sets your work apart from traditional jewellery design, and how do you push boundaries in your creations?

My work stands out in the world of men’s jewellery because I focus on minimalist and modern designs, incorporating bold coloured stones and a lot of shine. I believe modern men are looking for more striking pieces to enhance their style, so I aim to give them boldness and sophistication.

Innovation seems to be at the core of your designs. Can you share a particular piece or collection that exemplifies your approach to blending modern techniques with traditional craftsmanship?

The collection that truly put me on the map and continues to stand out is my series of scapulars representing the zodiac signs. I took a traditional piece, the scapular, and reimagined it using zirconia on one side and a plate with an engraved sign on the other. Each stone corresponds to a specific zodiac sign, giving it deeper meaning. It’s a blend of modern design, tradition, and bold innovation.

In a world where sustainability is increasingly important, how do you incorporate eco-friendly practices or materials into your jewellery, and what role do you think innovation plays in promoting sustainability in the industry?

Sustainability is integral to my process. In jewellery, the concept of reuse is key — we can always melt down a used piece and remold it into something new. This makes the entire process much more sustainable. The ability to reuse precious metals allows for minimal waste, which is a critical consideration for me.

Your work is known for its bold use of materials and forms. How do you source your materials, and what inspires your choice of gemstones, metals, and textures?

I only work with premium materials, specifically 925 silver and 19.2K gold. All pieces are designed and crafted by me. My inspiration often comes from vintage designs, which I reinterpret to make them bolder, fresher, and more modern.

Technology is changing how products are designed and produced. How have you incorporated digital tools, 3D printing, or other innovative technologies into your jewellery-making process?

When I first started, all of my pieces were made by hand. Today, however, I use a 3D resin printer. I design the piece on the computer, then send it to the printer. This allows me to create multiple molds at once, making the process faster and more efficient. Technology has certainly streamlined the work, but I still ensure each piece retains its unique, handcrafted essence.

Do you think there’s a particular cultural or artistic movement that has influenced your design philosophy, especially considering your connection to Portuguese heritage and global influences?

Yes, many of my designs are inspired by historical pieces from Portugal, which I then modernise. I take elements of traditional Portuguese art and craft, adding my own twist to make them unique and contemporary. This fusion of heritage and modernity is at the core of my philosophy.

Jewellery is deeply personal and emotional for many people. How do you approach creating custom pieces that capture the individuality of your clients, while maintaining your unique design identity?

Creating personalised pieces is one of my favorite aspects of the work. I make sure to have deep conversations with my clients to understand their tastes and personalities. From there, I design something that resonates with them while staying true to my brand’s identity. It’s always a challenge to strike that balance, but it’s incredibly rewarding.

As a leader in the contemporary jewellery scene, how do you see the future of jewellery design evolving in the next five to ten years, particularly in terms of craftsmanship, materials, and consumer demands?

I believe men’s jewellery will continue to evolve rapidly. Today, men are more willing to invest in unique, high-quality pieces. Over the next 10 years, I envision a growing number of specialists focused exclusively on creating luxury jewelry for men, with an emphasis on both innovation and personal style.

What challenges have you faced as an innovator in a traditional industry, and how do you overcome the resistance to change that often comes with pushing boundaries?

When I started my brand five years ago, it was difficult to introduce such modern, luxurious pieces into the men’s market, as most men were accustomed to more traditional, simplistic designs. But I stayed focused on my vision, remaining resilient despite the challenges. Over time, my designs have gained traction, and today, men are embracing the bold, modern pieces I offer.

Finally, looking back on your career, is there one moment or piece that you consider a turning point, or a design that really defined your signature style as an artist?

Absolutely. The collection of zodiac scapulars was a turning point for me. Four years on, it remains my best-seller and has truly defined my brand. It’s a collection I plan to keep as a cornerstone of my work for many years to come.
