They may now not have a formal home but the people at Hong Kong’s Shanghai Tang brand are still making consumers sit up and take notice.
After 17 years at the Pedder Building in Central, Shanghai Tang lost the bid for the space to Abercrombie & Fitch, which will pay two and half times the previous rent.
And now Shanghai Tang takes up residence from Friday night on Hong Kong’s iconic Victoria Harbour — inside a series of Mongolia “gers” or traditional houses.
Under the theme “A New Journey as a Nomad of Central,” Shanghai Tang’s gers have been placed on the rooftop of Hong Kong’s Central Ferry Pier 1.
“These exotic Mongolian Gers will operate as pop-up retail spaces, offering the new, limited edition Mongolian Collection as festive gift choices, as well as other signature Shanghai Tang products, ranging from ready-to-wear for women, men and children, to accessories, fragrances, and home wares””.
Along with Shanghai Tang’s own collections, the gers feature exhibitions and artifacts showcasing Mongolian culture.
Shanghai Tang will occupy the new space until the end of the year, and it is expected to move into a four-storey complex in Central by March 2012.
Shanghai Tang was founded in 1994 and established itself as the only Chinese luxury brand, with its range of traditional and contemporary Chinese fashion.
It was taken over by the Richemont group in 1998 and now has outlets in 14 countries throughout Asia, America, Europe and the Middle East.
