10 Fun Facts About the Oscars
Before the award ceremony comes to an end, we share some nuggets of information that you may not have known.
The Academy Awards are underway, with Chris Rock playing host in a year that has seen many a star shun the show due to the lack of diversity. His opening monologue tackled the issue of diversity, or lack therof as well as the sexist questions that are now forbidden. Injecting it with his own sense of humor, the comedian has now left us with images of George Clooney in our head that we would rather forget.
We were also looking forward to a certain award that was (just) handed out — we’re not going to mention which one (did you bring your lucky rabbit’s foot Leo? Lucky red undies? Well, whatever you did, it worked). So while we wait for the results to be announced at the Dolby Theater we thought we could entertain you with 10 key figures about Hollywood’s biggest night.

Representing the number of times Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated for an Oscar, a first for an actress aged 25 or under. In 2010, aged just 20, the Hunger Games star picked up her first nomination for Best Actress for her role in Winter’s Bone.
9
That’s the number of times Steven Spielberg has been nominated for an Oscar. His previous nominations were for E.T, The Color Purple and Schindler’s List. He won for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan and he’ll have to settle for that because Alejandro González Iñárritu won this year for The Revenant.
12
That’s the number of nominations that The Revenant has received. Iñárritu’s has picked up nominations in three of the main categories (and won, as noted above) but still falls short of the 14 nominations that Titanic and All About Eve received in the past.
29
No, not the number of times we’ve tried writing in to the Academy in support of Leo. It is actually the number of years between Sylvester Stallone’s two nominations for his role as Rocky Balboa. (Ed’s note: Not all of us here are making like supermodels for Leo). Sadly this was not to be Rocky’s year at the Oscars as the award for Best Supporting Actor went to Mark Rylance.
30
The total number of nominations received by Star Wars movies. With five nominations for the latest installment, The Force Awakens, the intergalactic adventure is edging closer to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. All in all, The Lord of the Rings movies have bagged 17 Oscars, with the third movie, The Return of the King, winning 11 alone. The six movies in the George Lucas saga have won a total 10 Oscars, with seven for Episode IV: A New Hope. While the Star Wars movies continue to earn fans, they were unable to beat Mad Max: Fury Road at this year’s ceremony.
40
Mustang is the 40th French movie to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, a record in the category. The last French movie to win the gong was Régis Wargnier’s Indochine in 1993. Since 1948, France has notched up 12 Oscars in various fields, including three Honorary Awards.
50
The total number of Oscar nominations for musician John Williams, the record for a living person. Since his first nomination in 1968, Steven Spielberg’s composer of choice has won five Oscars with music written for Fiddler on the Roof, Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. and Schindler’s List. The composer was unable to earn a sixth statue this year for his work in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The award ultimately went to Ennio Morricone for his original score in The Hateful Eight.
81
This number stands for the number of countries that submitted a feature film for the Best Foreign Language Film award. Paraguay sent a movie to the competition for the first time in history. However, the country’s entry wasn’t picked for the finalists’ shortlist, which includes Mustang (France), A War (Denmark), Embrace of the Serpent (Colombia), Theeb (Jordan) and Son of Saul (Hungary), the hot favorite for the gong.
6291
That’s the total number of Academy members who have voting right in this year’s Oscars. When the ceremony first began in 1927, there were only 230. With most of the members voting this year being white males over the age of 62, it certainly doesn’t help the #OscarsSoWhite debate.
200,000
That’s the value of the Oscars Gift Bag for those winning the top five major categories, because they truly deserve a first class 10 day trip to Israel or a two week holiday in Japan after all the months of stress and anticipation. Also in the bag — a year of Audi car rentals, beauty products, fitness sessions, laser beauty treatments, vodka, personalized m&m’s (yes that is a real thing) and most surprisingly, a sex toy. No, the sex toy is not the Oscar…
Now if you will excuse me, the final awards of the night await.
