Whimsical illustrations by Alice Lin

Illustrations inspired by Traditional Chinese Calligraphy and Paintings

Oct 10, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Beijing-based Artist Alice Lin started practicing calligraphy and learning about Chinese Paintings from a young age. Her whimsical style and detailed masterpieces are the result of an amalgamation of traditional techniques and watercolor. In addition to several monochromatic illustrations, Lin infuses muted colors into her paintings, making them appear antique and mysterious. The whimsical subjects of her paintings are varied, but could all be stock characters from a fantasy realm. Anthropomorphism is a common trend amongst her illustrations, specifically with reference to antelopes, rams and hare. Like a classical Chinese poem, her striking visuals are open-ended, hyperbolic and evocative.Ā Ā
