Paint sculptures by Lynda Benglis
Remembering an Artist who shifted paradigms in contemporary art
Renowned American artist and sculptor Lynda Benglis is known to break boundaries and challenge contemporary art. Traditionally, paint is used to create images on a foundation, often canvas. Benglis was a forerunner in breaking away from this. Pouring paint is not only viewed by Benglis as a means to create an overall picture. She treated the volatile liquid form as an object of its own and seeks to preserve it as such in her artwork. Her works are preserved and installed in their original format, presenting the transformative dynamic of piece.
Decades later, 6 other artist are following suit. Linda Besemer, Margie Livingston, Ryan Peter Miller, Laura Moriarty, David Allan Peters and Leah Rosenberg have created works to explore the ability of paint to be presented as a physical object to be molded. Although they are creating work individually, Benglis’s unique practices can be observed in their method and final piece. The legacy of the now 72 year old artist’s lives on.
