Modern-looking figures painted on tree trunk by Jana & JS

Creative artist couple take to the forest in their “suburban” stencil art series

May 04, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Australian/French artist couple Jana & Js have created a series of artworks that are painted directly onto the surface of trees in a forest. Using the circles formed from the cross-section of the old forest trees and smooth sides of the trees as their canvas, the duo paint figures of people of the modern world. Small figures of people dressed in contemporary clothing just chilling out are painted with great detail and realism using their signature stencil art style. However, they appear confined and crunched within the rim of the ridged barks and their expressions are unsettling , not in tune with the serenity of the forest landscape. This perhaps suggest the disparity between the nature and the modern cityscape. The figures that represent the confines of the city juxtaposed against the organicity of the forest scenery shows this. Typically, the artists works are often”inspired by the city and integrated in urban environments”. They describe that with this project, It was very exciting exploring this new support and seeing our work in a completely new ambiance. It gave a totally new dimension to our work.”
