Knitted Glass

Carol Milne crafts glass sculptures of knitting needles and yarn

Oct 17, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Seattle-based artist Carol Milne makes sculptures of glass being knit. She creates the illusion of glass being knit by employing techniques she invested in 2006 that involves knitting, lost-wax casting, mold-making and kiln casting. To create her masterpieces, Milne first makes a model of the sculpture from wax which is then encased by a refractory mold material that withstands high temperature. Hot steam is used to melt the wax, resulting in an empty cavity in the shape of the artwork that she creates. Pieces of glass are placed into the molds which are heated to extremely high temperature. Once the piece cools down, Milne is able to carefully chip at the cooled down glass to form neatly organized yarn-like strands that are looped around knitting needles.
