How did we decide our first cover?

For our first edition of React, our quarterly roundtable discussion, we would like to address a serious question: As Art Republik, how do we decide our first cover? And it all boiled down to a battle between three choices

Art Republik welcomes a discussion of art in all its forms. We embody strong core values such as diversity, range, equality and depth throughout the entire magazine. Our first theme ‘What Is Art’ aims to deliver that message across, as well as set the tone for our future issues. We want to establish the fact that art has no boundaries, and that it is everywhere. That said, we also want to make it clear that not all things are art, and in order for there to be good art, there is also bad art — we will be addressing that question in every issue of Art Republik through features as well as audience-engaging content.

For our first edition of React, our quarterly roundtable discussion, we would like to address a serious question: As Art Republik, how do we decide our first cover? And it all boiled down to a battle between three choices (as pictured below).

We ended up going with the middle choice as we felt that it not only embodies the theme of our inaugural issue, but it is also the best of both worlds; diverse and clean, yet arresting and brave.

But as most things in this world, everything is subjective. Which one would you have gone for?
