“Hello, my name is Paul Smith” opened on the 15th November 2013 to the public at London’s Design museum. The 4 month long exhibition, opened until 9th March 2014, celebrates the career of one of the most recognisable and influential British designers of all times, Paul Smith. Celebrating his career to date as well as exploring future advances, the exhibition also draws on Smith’s personal archive, from the company’s very first tiny shop in Nottingham in 1970 to the company becoming one of the leading fashion brands in the world today.
The name Paul Smith needs no introduction in the world of fashion. The designer was born in Nottingham and began his career at the early age of 15 in a clothing warehouse. Paul Smith is famous for his witty and quirky style and he often adds his own personal twist to classic designs and elevated it, and this made him different from the rest. Today, Paul Smith is a global brand that sells clothes and shoes to even furniture in thirty –five different countries around the world.
The exhibition explores the creative process and natural inquisitiveness of Paul Smith and what inspired him. It will also explore how Smith’s intuitive take on design, together with his hard work, led the company into its lasting success. For the first time, the exhibition will also feature his art collection, which makes the whole experience a more personal one.
Included in the exhibition is a collection of photographs and art, a recreation of his electric office and a section of his studio. The audience will be able to journey into the brilliant mind of Paul Smith and experience how he works and what inspires him.
The first space you walk into when you enter the exhibition is the recreation of the box space Nottingham shop. This recreation represents the humble beginning of Smith’s journey into his career and illustrates to the audience that his business was no overnight success.
Another room recreates Smith’s design studio space where their signature Paul Smith prints is created. Here, the space shows the intricate details of the famous multi-coloured stripe patterns and other prints.
