Fortune Market

Kris Vervaeke photographs the eroding tradition of fortune-telling in Hong Kong

Photographer Kris Vervaeke’s ‘Fortune Market’ documents the fortune tellers of Hong Kong. While traditionally trusted as the masters of reading fate and fortune, the future of fortune telling is uncertain, the tradition slowly eroding. Vervaeke explains “The fortune tellers have all different backgrounds. For some, the job is passed on from generation to the next within a family. others learn it from a master or through other means. The foture of the shops is uncertain as finding someone interested to take over is getting more and more difficult. In the meantime, the more good fortune one can provide, the better the business.” Vervaeke captures the struggle to keep the tradition alive. Behind a taoist temple sits a concrete building with more than 100 fortune telling shops. In each cramped shop space, walls and tables are decorated with amulets and charts of facial features. Yet in every shop is a lone fortune teller, hoping for a single customer to walk in.
