Driftwood Horse Sculptures by James Doran-Webb
Artist expresses strong message about vitality life on this planet
British Artist James Doran-Webb has sculpted impressive life-sized horses made from driftwood. These majestic figures each take about 1,000 hours to 3,000 hours to make with a team of skilfull craftsmen. Each driftwood used in these compositions were cafully picked by the artist himself to determine the wood that would fit each horse best, as each horse is built differently. His work displayed against the backdrop of a beach is uplifting and has a calming quality about it when admired. Doran-Webb sculpts them such that each horse possesses vitality, movement and freedom, bringing aesthetic pleasure to the viewers.
“I chose to sculpt animals as I have a great affinity for the animal spirit believing essentially that all living things share the bond of life and the struggle to exist,” explains the Artist.“The driftwood is very tactile and demands to be interacted with – if I could make one person a little more aware of nature and the impact of nature on their lives I would be happy. I am a firm believer in our need to practise sustainable living in order to give future generations a better chance of survival.“
