Defying Gravity
Artist creates artwork by skillfully stacking balanced stones
Balancing Rocks
Michael Grab has created a part installation part experimental artwork by skillfully stacking rocks on top of one another. The rock formation is unbelievable supported by rocks of various sizes and textures. Balancing with such perfection is somewhat mystical and surrealistic, making the viewer highly skeptical on how this structure is supported. His work, aptly titled Balancing Rocks, is only held together by gravity, which Grab claims is the only “glue” that holds this delicate structure together.
The balancing process stemmed from Grab’s curiosity of the small connections between the stones’ natural shapes and how they support each other despite varying in mass. This process is also described by Grab as a therapeutic one that nurtures both his patience and meditative mind. He collaborates with the environment, using his landscape and natural resources in his surroundings to affect his mental and physical state, in turn influencing his creative process. Grab explains that “The process resembles an intimate dance with the elements; adapting to the moments, embracing creative intuition. Focused breathing.. Silence… exploring and redefining ‘possible.'”
