Amalgamated
Studio Markunpoika constructs a series of vases from pencils
The innovative Studio Markunpoika has designed a new series of vases constructed from hundreds of assembled pencils. Inspired by the pencil’s unique hexagonal shape, the pencils are tightly glued together at each side to form a whole solid block. After creating the blocks of different dimensions, they are assembled together to form the vessels. To finish off the process. the final pieces are carved on a machine lathe to reveal the insides of the wooden pencils. The outer design of the vases resemble closely packed cells.
Studio Markunpoika explain on their website: “Amalgamated” is a collection which explores the relationship of a mass produced ‘tool’ and its individual purpose. The beauty of the pencil as an object seems to go unnoticed if utilised only for their primary purpose. “Amalgamated” is a visual and tactile investigation by using pencils as a raw material. This holistic principle has been the fundament for creating this set of vases; let the pencils become a thing themselves.”
