German pooches are getting the royal treatment as owners dish out more than $7 billion each year for pedicures, winter jackets and even wedding dresses for their dogs, the German Kennel Club (VDH) said on Monday.

Boutiques are popping up in cities across the country along with many websites that let owners buy posh accessories for their pups.

Monika Knut, the owner of Hundestolz (Dog Pride) boutique in Düsseldorf says owners frequently come in looking for outfits for their pets to match their own.

“Luxury is the theme. When one wants to go shopping in a high-end store, the dog also has to look its best and wear a nice collar,” said VDH spokesman Udo Kopernik, noting that Germany is well ahead of its European counterparts in pet-spending.

This trend has already been prevalent across the Atlantic, in the US where dog owners spend more than $50 billion on their pets for everything from Swarovski studded collars to testicular implants.

In Japan, it’s even more hyped, as cats and dogs are more popular than children and the population of pets exceeds that of children under 15 by 23 million.
