This week  introduced a three prototype collection of irons consisting of the Vapor Pro, Vapor Pro Combo and Vapor Speed and characterized by a play-on-gravity in the design called Modern Muscle.

Conceived when engineers at Nike analyzed the wear patterns on Tiger Woods’s irons and noticed the impact pattern between the center and the toe of the clubface, Modern Muscle claims to reinvent the game.

Nike moved the center of gravity forward from the heel to the center by adding tungsten plugs to the toe.

Nike’s Vapor Pro Combo 2-iron contributed to Rory McIlroy’s victory in the 2014 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, in which he joined the record books, carding a closing one under par 71 to claim a two shot victory over Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler.

The longer of the irons (2i-7i) in the Vapor Pro Combo aims for faster ball speed and higher trajectory while increasing stability with its machined face and forged chassis. The short irons (8i-AW) are intended for improved shotmaking because the shallow cavity enables a strong trajectory.

Next in the collection is the Vapor Speed, of which distance and forgiveness are its main objectives. The Vapor Pro is said to offer maximum precision.

The Vapor Pro Combo irons are set to retail for a suggested price of $1,320 for both, the Pro Irons for $1,200 and the Speed Irons for $960.

All Irons in the collection will be available on Nike.com and at select retailers October 31, 2014.
