5 Beauty Brands To Buy From This Earth Day 2022

From Clarins to Chanel, these beauty brands are incorporating sustainability into its products.

The beauty industry is notoriously known for its use of plastics in its packaging. As many of these products are often discarded after use, the amount of waste generated is unimaginable. In 2018, it is said that an estimated 120 billion units of cosmetics packaging were produced globally. This includes lipsticks, foundation cases, bottles, pumps, caps, and others. Unfortunately, only 9 per cent of all plastic waste is recycled, with the remainder ending up in landfills, dumps, or incinerated.

Plastics, in general, do not break down like natural products. So, if plastic wastes are thrown away, the footprint remains forever. In short, the world would be filled with that bottle of toner you bought just a couple of months back. But things are changing now as the new generation of eco-conscious consumers is clamouring for big beauty brands to be accountable and address this pertinent issue.

With the ongoing momentum for sustainability, beauty brands are pivoting the way it manufactures products and looking for ways to reduce plastic footprints. Many of these brands are offering products in biodegradable and recyclable packaging. Aside from that, brands are also allowing customers to have their products refilled at the stores or purchase refills. Some even went a step further by pledging support for NGOs or ensuring from the get-go that the products are made sustainably.

Ahead of Earth Day 2022, we have curated a list of five beauty brands that are doing their part to contribute to the world of sustainable beauty.

Clarins

Clarins is a prestigious French beauty brand that is known for its plant-powered innovations and unique skincare application techniques. To ensure that its products are of the highest standard, Clarins uses top-notch ingredients that are sourced with the utmost care for the environment. Health, education, and biodiversity conservation are the top three areas that the brand is focused on as part of its long-term initiatives to benefit people and the planet.

For Earth Day 2022, Clarins will be supporting mangrove reforestation through the sales of its latest product: Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment Cream. A portion of the profits earned will be donated to support mangrove reforestation in southern Thailand. Locally, the brand is also planning to plant 5,000 trees this year under its Seeds of Beauty initiative, which has planted over 500,000 trees worldwide.

Formulated with natural plant ingredients like shea butter, sesame oil, and myrrh extract, the cream not only nourishes tired, dry hands but also smooths cuticles around the nails. The product is made with recycled plastic and is 100 per cent recyclable. Opting for a flip-top cap, compared to a screw-on, allows the brand to reduce its plastic usage by 16 per cent.

Tatcha

When it comes to accounting for the carbon footprint of a supply chain, Japanese beauty brand Tatcha is perhaps one of the leading brands out there. Not only is the brand only using sustainable materials for its packaging, Tatcha is also making sure that it is not forgoing its social and environmental responsibility when it comes to sourcing its ingredients. Anchoring the brand is the common Japanese phrase “mottainai”, meaning “too precious to waste”.

Many times, a brand’s carbon footprint is calculated from when the product leaves its manufacturing base. At Tatcha, the brand looks back and accounts for all emissions resulting from start to finish. This means the transportation of raw materials, empty packaging to fillers, inventory to the warehouse, and shipment of products to retail partners and customers.

The Water Cream is one of the most popular products to try. It is a water-based moisturiser that helps to hydrate the skin. The Hasasei-3 Complex and Japanese botanicals like Japanese wild rose are great at fighting free-radical damage to aid the skin’s ageing healthily.

Origins

Origins is on a mission to make 80 per cent of its packaging by weight recyclable, reusable, recycled, or recoverable. It is slowly getting there. As of today, the brand is at 55 per cent and hopes to achieve its goal by 2023. Apart from focusing on its packaging, the brand’s cartons are Forest Stewardship Council certified. This means that the paperboard used in the boxes is made from responsibly managed forests.

Origins manufactures its products entirely with renewable energy. And in all stores, the brand prioritises the use of low-emitting, recyclable and/or recyclable materials for all store fixtures and visual merchandising.

One of the star products of the brand is the Advanced Mega-Mushroom Relief & Resilience Treatment Lotion. The newly formulated lotion strengthens the skin barrier and calms dry, red, irritated-looking skin. Its watery texture enables the product to be absorbed quickly and preps the skin for the other skincare products and makeup.

Luxury French brand Chanel has always believed that nature’s intelligence is unsurpassable. To that end, this conviction has led the brand to create a new generation of skincare products that is centred on a return to essentials. One of its priorities is to develop its products with quality ingredients that have been sourced responsibly and respect the environment. In the newly launched, N°1 de CHANEL, it contains up to 97 per cent ingredients of natural origin. The effectiveness, safety, and sensoriality of the collection are not compromised.

The packaging of the entire range is eco-designed. Up to 80 per cent of the products are made of glass, and in particular, the cream jar is refillable and patented. The brand said that refilling the Revitalising Cream twice allows its greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced by half.
