A 10,180 square-foot megamansion that sits above an extremely picturesque spot on the coast of California was listed last week for US$56 million.

The gated property is located on more than an acre of land directly above the Pacific Ocean at Point Dume and overlooks Westward Beach, according to the listing with The Agency. Altogether, the main home and the guest house offer seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

The contemporary megamansion was designed by architect Doug Burdge and is one of his first contemporary-style builds according to one of the listing agents, Sandro Dazzan.

“We were there today and it was the perfect day to see it,” Mr Dazzan said about the mansion. “A crisp morning, right after the rain, it was clear as can be. You can hear the waves crashing below you and there are cypress trees to the left that are part of the Point Dume Natural Preserve that give it a Big Sur vibe. It’s a timeless home, with great volume…and indoor-outdoor flow.”

The home has plenty of features contributing to its indoor-outdoor feel, including “vanishing” walls throughout the property to allow for easy access to the patios and covered terraces with gorgeous views of the ocean vistas. To further enhance the visual continuity of the home, wood flooring and cabinetry, as well as stone details, help bring the outdoors in.

Three of the bedrooms in the property offer ocean views with the master bedroom offering its own separate sitting area that could be converted to an office or gym area depending on preference. It also has a dressing room and en-suite bathroom with a soaking tub with a view of both the pool and ocean.

Other amenities include a game room, a full bar, a wine cellar and a gym according to the listing.

If that doesn’t tickle your fancy there is a “floating” Miami mansion for US$15 million. In an effort to combat the rising sea levels and flooded homes, this residence designed by Rene Gonzalez could be a respite from the effects of global warming.

The home is perched on a set of columns to prevent water damage. Its eccentricity is presented to you right from the get-go, as you enter via a retractable automated staircase that ascends from the gardens to the actual home.

Inside, the home feels light and airy, despite the fact that it’s surrounded by massive concrete walls. The space is divided into four separate sections: a living room and kitchen, a master bedroom suite and two separate guest rooms. It’s a 3,312 square-foot parcel altogether, with floor-to-ceiling retractable panes that has the same indoor-outdoor flow as the previous property.

The property also features a lap pool, and also a waterfall surrounded by plants, so it feels a bit like you’re entering a private jungle whenever you step outside. There’s also an outdoor shower, convenient to rinse off after a swim. If you like to entertain, there’s an alfresco space for lounging by the pool as well, and the rooftop serves as additional entertaining space.

The skylights and windows lend the space its airiness, which complements the stilts the home is perched on.
