In a joint project between Innovation Imperative, an architectural practice in London established in 2000, and engineers from Canadian firm WSP, plans are set for a fascinating new hotel with a modular set-up comprised of concrete pods. Although the location of the project is yet to be finalised, its architecture is designed to be adaptable for anywhere around the world.

Designed by David Ajasa-Adekunle, the proposed boutique Tetra Hotel resembles the building blocks of tetra shed – an award-winning tessellating modular building system.

Made up of numerous concrete pods each of about 19m in height, the futuristic modular hotel will house public areas designed for large crowds, including bars, restaurants, and other spaces suitable for various events such as markets, exhibitions and conferences.

According to WSP’s press release, ‘Each pod will feature multiple floors with the top storing a large bed set under a skylight while a shower will be located just below it. A third platform will feature a couch for entertaining, and just beneath it at the bottom of the pod there will be a secluded working area with a full desk.”

The Tetra hotel envisions itself to be a venue constantly buzzing with activities regarding arts and design. Designed to be versatile and serve a diversity of purposes, Tetra hotel also aims to push for increased recognition to talented designers and creatives across various disciplines by featuring them within these areas.

Beyond its fancy facades and events, the Tetra hotel also maintains sustainability at one of its core values. Engineered to be as low energy as possible, there is a possibility that the building can function completely off grid and independent. The Tetra hotel will use local seawater for cooling and solar thermal panels for hot water heating among other green technologies. During the construction phase, the pods will be pre-fabricated and assembled on-site for speed of delivery. Local rocks will be used to construct the architecture foundation to minimise environmental impact.

The team plans to confirm the delivery timescale and location of the first Tetra Hotel by the end of this year.
