Be sure to take a good look at these paintings. Look beyond the beauty of picturesque scenes, and you will find large faces starting to emerge. Within these oil paintings by Oleg Shuplyak is embedded a second layer of optical illusions. The Ukrainian Artist conceals faces of famous people in his paintings using color, shading and strategically placing the objects such that the portraits are only visible when the viewer changes one’s perception. Within a surrealistic painting of two youths bathing in the lake with a swan in sight is the profile of Sigmund Freud. Upon an impressionistic painting of a wheat field emerges the famous self-portrait of Vincent Van Gogh. Shulyak draws these parallels within the style he adopts and the iconic artists represented in the painting. In some of his paintings, the figure presented is more ambiguous, and can only be ascertained by changing one’s focal point a few times. However, these compositions are mind-blowing once deciphered. After spotting the illusion, Shuplyak makes it difficult for us to un-see the faces and appreciate the events in the foreground. After inspecting each image one after another, you will find it almost impossible not to instantly spot the eyes and outline of the portrait coming forth.
