Canadian Artist Ruth Oosterman gets in touch with her childlike side, collaborating with her two-year-old daughter eve in her recent series. Using her child’s doodles as the artwork’s framework, Oosterman transforms the black and white scribbles into vibrantly coloured watercolor paintings. Her daughter, innocent and lacking inhibition, scribbles random strokes on pieces of paper with black ink pen and eve takes them and envisions possible visuals between the outlines created. She uses watercolors to create the hidden pictures within the scribbles. Playful images from the ‘elephant king’, a giant purple creature bearing a golden crown, and ‘the lady and the fox’, a red-headed woman wearing an animal-like hairpiece, are brought out through the paint. Oosterman explains, ‘just as my painting forms, I make sure to follow her outlines and leave some of her drawing visible, keeping it a collaboration. it is a fine balance that I am continuing to learn from.’’
