Gift From Above

Naoko Okane creates clay sculpture of falling water droplets

Jul 20, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Japanese artist Naoko Okane has created a striking glazed clay sculpture of water droplets falling from the sky. The sculpture, titled Gift From Above, is a 4 by 4 foot art piece consisting of blue fired, glazed bowls with large clay water droplets dangling directly above them. It seems as though the water bowls are of the perfect shape and size to receive each individual water droplet, as if the water droplet belongs to the bowl.

When asked about her inspiration, she explains, “Sometimes the true meaning of work of art is not revealed to the artist until the play time is over. When I was playing with a cantaloupe, I was reminded of a monk’s offering bowl, which was used to receive food on their pilgrimage. Thus, monks don’t have to carry their food. Playful experiments allowed me to create a beautiful crackle effect that made me think of deep, clear waters of a pristine lake. The cantaloupe offering bowl fit nicely in my palms. I looked inside, then I looked up, expecting to see some offering coming down from the sky. What gift comes from the sky? Water. Gift from Above was born. “
